The process for undergoing DNA paternity testing is a simple and straightforward one. Once you have come to the firm decision that a DNA paternity test will give you the answers that you are looking for; you’ll have little difficulty finding a company to carry out the test and provide the analysis.
The procedures involved differ depending on whether you want the test carried out for personal peace of mind or whether you need the test carried out for legal reasons. If the test is purely for individual assurance the test provider will send the test kit to your home for you to take the sample and then send into the laboratory. However, if you require DNA paternity testing for legal purposes, the sample must be taken by a doctor who will also need confirmation of your identity.
If this is the case the DNA testing kit will be sent to a physician of your choice and you must attend the appointment with adequate proof of identity for both parties being tested (typically two passport photos). In some regions fingerprints will also need to be taken and the procedure witnessed by an independent third party. The doctor will then send the samples back to the laboratory for analysis, along with the confirmation of identity.
The test itself is brief and painless. Because each cell in the body contains the same genetic code; there’s no reason to take a blood sample. Instead a swab of cheek cells is obtained form the inside of the mouth. Most reputable DNA paternity testing companies can provide you with test results within five working days. DNA tests are statistically very reliable and there’s little room for error. Results are 99.999% accurate for inclusions (‘yes’ the individuals are related) and 100% accurate for exclusions (‘no’ the individuals aren’t related).
