DNA paternity tests have the potential to dramatically alter many people’s lives and aren’t and are area where anyone should consider cutting corners. In recent years DNA tests have become increasingly widely available thanks to advances in genetics and the power of the media. In turn, this has driven down costs; bringing DNA tests within most people’s financial reach. However, the quality of service varies enormously and it is far better to pay a little more for guaranteed accuracy than opt for a cheap DNA paternity test.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that all DNA paternity tests are the same; they aren’t. As a rule of thumb you can expect thoroughness to come down with price. Instead of the usual 16 genetic regions analysed; a lower quality test will examine less than 12 and sometimes as few as six regions. Clearly this will have implications for the reliability of the test results.
However, the good news is that there are a number of ways of securing cheap DNA paternity tests, without compromising the quality for the cost. The single best piece of advice is to shop around before committing to any one provider. A growing number of companies offer a variety of payment options; including instalments and long-term payment plans (although results are typically only released once the full payment has been met or financing approved). You’ll also find that some companies offer discounted rates if you are testing more than one child at a time.
Another way to cut costs is to carry out the test in your own home; although the results won’t be admissible in a court of law and are primarily used to satisfy personal concerns. Court approved tests can be up to twice as expensive as they provide a more detailed report; they can also be performed without the presence of the mother. If you require the results to be admissible in court the DNA sample must be taken by a doctor, which incurs an additional cost. It’s also worth noting that ‘sampling fees’ vary considerably from doctor to doctor.
