These consist of a wooden frame with a fixed pane of glass and hinged panes known as sashes which can be opened. These come in different styles and materials. Casement windows can have metal frames - usually mild steel or aluminium. Steel frames can be prone to rusting. Newer frames are sometimes made of plastic and require no maintenance once installed. Sash windows have two panes of glass which slide vertically up or down to open. Pivot windows have a pane of glass held in a wooden frame on hinge mechanisms which allow the window to be tilted right over to make cleaning the outside easier. Louvre windows consist of glass slats, similar to blinds, which are pivoted. They are good for ventilation but are not particularly secure.
DIY suppliers can supply made-to-measure windows for fitting yourself. When replacing window in an older house, it is preferable to have wooden-frame windows custom-made than to replace them with modern aluminium or plastic windows. Many companies who supply replacement windows can also fit them for you as part of the service. Replacing windows do not usually require planning permission but if major changes are planned, then it may be worth getting in touch with your local authority regarding Building Control regulations.
DIY double glazing is increasingly popular to reduce heat loss, draughts and noise. The main type that is suitable for doing yourself is secondary double glazing where a pane of glass is fitted over the existing window. Ready-made windows with double glazing are available.
Old wooden casement and sash windows require a certain amount of care and maintenance but should last well. New or stripped wooden frames should be treated with wood preserver before painting. Sashes of wooden casement windows may expand in rain and stick. If the windows have not been painted properly, wait for dry weather and paint them. Leave the window open while the paint is drying. If the window has been painted shut, work a wallpaper scraper or thin knife between the sash and the frame.
Rotting wooden window sills need to be replaced. Remember to weather-proof wooden frames and sills to prevent them rotting. Stone sills may erode in bad weather if not protected. They can also crack. Repair cracks with waterproof mortar.
Occasionally the sash cords on sash windows will wear out and break. When replacing them, replace both at the same time even if only one has broken. The sashes have to be completely removed to allow access to the cords.
