DIY tools can be bought or hired. For specialist or one-off jobs, it is worth considering hiring a particular tool for the job. For instance for sanding floorboards, it is much more sensible to hire a sander for the day. If buying tools, on the whole it much better value to spend a bit more on good quality tools. However it depends on how often you are going to use them and what sort of level of work you are trying to achieve. DIY tools should be looked after carefully to keep them in good nick. Blades should be sharpened regularly. Do not leave garden implements out overnight as they may rust over time. Buying second-hand tools from second-hand shops or car boot sales can be a cheaper option but check tools for rust and damage.

Power tools and other heavy DIY tools should feel comfortable to use. When selecting a tool for you, handle it first to decide whether it is suitable for you. People who aren't as strong may struggle a bit with heavier tools, in which case it is better to go for something lighter that feels comfortable, otherwise there is no point in trying to work with a tool that is a struggle to use.

When putting together a basic tool kit, the following items would be useful:

• A hammer - claw hammers have one end shaped like a hook for removing old nails, pin hammers have one end that is flat making it good for levering, and club hammers have more weight and can be very effective;
• Spanners - either go for a selection of different sizes, or purchase an adjustable spanner for tackling a range of jobs. A combination spanner has ring head on one end which is good for getting a good grip on a tight nut;
• Screwdrivers - again it is helpful to have different shapes and sizes. Screwdrivers can come in a cross shape as well as a straight wedge. The cross shape gives better purchase on cross shaped screws;
• A tape measure and metal ruler - a tape measure is essential for measuring walls etc and a metal ruler can be used as marker when needing to draw or score a straight line, or for cutting along with a Stanley knife;
• A power drill - different bit sizes are available;
• A spirit level - this is essential for checking that shelves and walls are completely level.

These items are useful as a generalised tool kit but different jobs will require specific tools. When using power tools read the instructions carefully and take note of any safety procedures.
