Make sure you have the correct tools and materials for the job in hand. Many DIY projects fall apart because of using the wrong tool or material for the wrong job. Take the measurements you need and use them to work out how much of each item, for instance wallpaper or tiles, you need. You should allow a bit extra in case of mistakes, for instance tearing a strip of wallpaper. It is a shame to run out of materials half way through a job and have to go back to the store to get more supplies. For coloured items such as custom-mixed paint, it can be very hard to get a match between batches. Assess the area you are working in to judge whether any project-specific materials will be required: for instance when tiling round a fireplace, you need fire cement instead of ordinary grout. Make sure you have the right tools before you start work. It is annoying having to break off in the middle of something.
Some DIY projects may require planning permission from your local authority. This is something you would have to obtain before you started work. Likewise Building Regulation approval is mandatory for many larger projects. This is for the health and safety of those working on the site. A rough guide to whether some of the projects listed on this site require planning permission and/or Building Regulation approval is given below:

Do not be embarrassed to ask the experts for advice if you are unsure. It is better to be safe than sorry. Work out a timescale for your DIY project. Giving yourself deadlines will help prevent you losing interest half-way through the project leaving it uncompleted.
When decorating make sure your surfaces are clean and dry before decorating and cover up furniture etc with dust sheets to keep mess to a minimum. Part of carrying out a DIY project well is cleaning up afterwards.
