Hedges take a long time to grow and can block out too much natural sunlight. Walls are more durable but take longer to put up. Fences are cheaper than brick or stone walls in the short term but do require more maintenance and replacement which may cancel out the savings in the long term. Privacy is another consideration when planning to build a fence yourself. How high do you want it and do you want to make it out of an opaque material to provide more privacy, or do you want to build a wire fence which would let the sunlight into the garden. If building a fence between your property and your neighbours, you need to consult your neighbour in order to take their wishes into consideration and discuss how the cost should be divided between you. Another consideration before you start work is whether you need planning permission. Consult your local authority who will be able to advise you.
Different types of fencing available are: fences made from wire netting stretched between wooden posts; trellis fencing which folds up concertina-style; wooden fencing; low picket or ranch-style fences; or concrete fencing. Wire fencing does not afford much privacy and does not look attractive but can be appropriate for a garden which does not get much sunlight. It is not that durable either. Trellis fencing is ideal for climbing plants but it is not very strong. DIY fences are available with ready-made panels which lock together. Timber fence kits are available from DIY stores and wooden fences look more attractive and make a more effective barrier than wire ones. Fences made out of cast concrete are more hard-wearing and more secure than other options. DIY fences with interlocking sections are available.
Certain types of DIY fences require maintaining. Wooden fences need to be treated with wood preserver to protect it from the weather. They usually have to be retreated every year otherwise the wood rots and decays. Wood preserver comes in all sorts of different colours; either natural wood colours or more unusual colours are available. Strong winds can weaken the foundations or even bring fences down so check fences after a storm. Check the deeds of the property to see who is responsible for maintaining fences that divide properties. Both for building new fences, and maintaining existing ones, you may need to ask your neighbour's permission to get access from their side of the fence.
