DIY decking consists of a wooden platform constructed in the garden to give an area for sitting outside. The advantages of decking are that it gives a flat, level, hard area for putting out garden furniture for eating and drinking outside. This is particularly useful on sloped or soft areas.
To prepare to install DIY decking, the first step is to decide where you want the decking to go. Consider how close it will be to trees and other garden features which could affect the position. DIY decking kits are available from DIY stores so select a DIY decking kit that is the right size for the location, or you can build your own decking. If building your own, work out how much timber you will need, allowing a bit extra for mistakes and then buy the timber from a building merchants, garden centre or DIY store. Timber is available in different types of wood and different colours. DIY decking kits should include interlocking joists and screws so the only other item you need is a drill. DIY decking kits should also come with a guarantee.
When the decking has been put together it will need some sort of treatment to protect it against the weather. Wood preserver and various wood finishes are available. It is also possible to paint decking although you may need to use an outdoor primer first. Wood preserver also protects the decking from insect attack which will make it last longer. Wood decking is not as durable as patio areas but is easier to remove if you don't want it any more. Decking cleaner is available for keeping the decking clean and bright. The finish may need to be redone every few years or so decking does require more maintenance than patios. Products that are sold for protecting decking include: decking seal to help prevent cracking and splitting while allowing the wood to breathe; decking wood stain which comes in different colours to give different wood-effect looks, for instance pine, oak or mahogany; and decking oil which gives a more natural look, bring out the natural features of the wood.
