Be particularly careful with doing electrical work in bathrooms as it is very easy for electrics to get wet with disastrous consequences. The electrical supply should be switched off at the mains which will probably be located under the stairs or in the hall. The only sockets that should be fitted in bathrooms are ones approved for electric shavers. Light switches in bathrooms are usually operated by a cord mounted on the ceiling to avoid people who are wet from the bath or shower touching a light switch. Never use electrical appliances that plug into the mains supply apart from a shaver in bathrooms.
Some more common DIY bathroom tasks that may come up are: fixing leaking taps, decorating or fixing leaks. If needing to adjust the central heating, the boiler is usually located in the bathroom. The bathroom usually contains a toilet, bath and/or shower, basin and possibly a bidet. Leaks in pipes can be fixed with epoxy resin repair putty, silicone paste sealant or self-amalgamating tape (for small leaks). Bathroom fittings (for instance the bath) should be sealed with silicone sealant to prevent water getting behind them.
When decorating the bathroom, easy-to-clean surfaces such as tiles or linoleum are a good choice. Tiling walls protects them from damp and floors can also be tiled. Vinyl tiles can be stuck down on non-porous surfaces and they are easy to apply. If painting the bathroom, use paint designed specifically for bathrooms as these will be more damp resistant. Bathroom suites consisting of baths, toilets, basin and bidet are available in many different colours - however bear in mind that white is easiest to match. Bathroom suites tend to be semi-permanent fixtures as well so it is better to go for neutral colours if possible.
Often leaking taps can be fixed by replacing the washer. Turn the tap off at the mains and put the plug in the plughole before starting work - using the plug will stop small parts disappearing down the drain. Dismantle the tap carefully to locate washer which may have worn out. You will need a spanner to unscrew the headgear, under which is the washer.
Gas appliances, such as a gas-powered shower must be installed by a CORGI-registered professional.
