The Credit card application form is usually divided into sections. The first section of the Credit card application is the personal section, where the applicant will fill in personal details. The next section on the Credit card application is normally a bank details section, and then there is an employment and income section. Each of these sections is important, but within them are details of particular importance in terms of the success of a Credit card application.
Applications are usually Credit scored, which is where the Credit card company sends some of your details off to a Credit reference agency, such as Experian. The Credit reference agency will send back the applicant's score, and that will serve as one of the main criteria in the decision of the Credit card company to accept the application. Ultimately, you'll get a Credit card if the card company thinks that you will eventually be able to pay back your debt.
In general, customers are not usually told why their application has not been rejected, but experience has suggested some areas of the application that can make a difference. It is vital that you tell the truth on the application, but it is still useful to know what some of the rules could be, and thus which areas of the application are important. These criteria will determine which Credit card you will eventually be accepted for, so reading this could possibly save you some wasted time filling out application forms.
It may be obvious but one of the most important pieces of information required is your address. The company will want to know your address not just now, but for the last 2 or 3 years, so make sure you have that information handy. This will make it easier for the reference agency to find you in their files. (Do not think that it's good if they can't find you). If you are not a homeowner, you are at a slight disadvantage, as the companies may decide that a homeowner has more assets and so are more secure. If you are a tenant, that won't usually stop you being successful, but if you are a tenant and have moved around a lot, the reference agency will score you lower.
The bank details section is important, as many companies will prefer you to pay a small amount each month by direct debit, rather than rely on you paying the minimum amount. It is also another way of identifying you and your financial history, hence you will need to give details for the last few years if you have recently changed.
The employment and income details are very important. Your income will determine your ability to repay your debts, and will determine your Credit limit, which is how much the provider is essentially prepared to lend you before you have to pay them back. You'll be asked for your gross income, and probably how much your income is each month, after tax, and you will probably be asked for 3 years history as well. If you are currently not employed, that doesn't mean you won't succeed, but you will probably need to speak to the provider. If you have changed jobs frequently, that may count against you, because there is usually a probation period with jobs, so income is not as secure.
