- Mark Skousen
While the world’s first gold coins were struck in ancient Asia Minor, it was Lydia’s King Croesus who introduced pure gold coins around 560 B.C. Throughout the ancient world there were some states which preferred silver and some gold as their main precious metal for currency, but this was mainly dependent on which was abundant in the area.
Gold coins weren’t wide spread in the early years of ancient Rome. Silver and copper coins remained prominent until after the death of Julius Caesar, when gold coins began to be introduced into Roman coinage. Years later the Italian cities of Genoa, Venice and Florence, busy centers of trade, minted a lot of gold coins.
Venetians created the gold Ducat, which was the most popular gold coin in the world for several centuries in the Middle Ages. These days you’ll find one of the world’s most famous mints of gold coins in Vienna, which has been working for more than 800 years.
The importance of gold coins has never been overlooked by nations throughout history. Gold coins have always been prized as a form of investment as well as currency, and some are treasured as much for their artistic beauty as their dollar value.
The United States Mint issued the first American gold coins in 1795, and Portugal began striking their own coins after the discovery of previously rare Brazilian gold in the early 18th Century. The Spanish had produced gold coins for years before this, taking advantage of the riches abundant in Mexico and Latin America.
Gold coins are highly prized by both numismatic collectors and investors. Due to their stable value gold bullion coins are seen as an ideal way to keep a proportion of one’s wealth. South Africa issued the Krugerrand in 1967, a modern bullion coin which proved popular with both collectors and investors. The British sovereign is the long-standing stalwart of gold coins and is also a favourite of collectors.
Several other gold coins are established choices of collectors, and are easily found for sale and to buy. As well as the Krugerrand and the Sovereign, you’ll find the American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, Mexican Libertad, Chinese Panda and Australian Kangaroo coins amongst coin collections everywhere.
