From Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe, commemorative coins are issued worldwide in honor of important events and influential people. Most commemorative coins are issued with low mintages, and their relative rarity adds to demand by collectors. Below are just a few of the thousands of commemorative coins available to collectors.

• One of the first American commemorative coins was issued to celebrate the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. The fair welcomed 25 million visitors and was dubbed the Columbian Exposition, honouring Columbus’ voyage of discovery to the United States 400 years previously. The 400th, 1492nd and 1892nd of these antique coins were struck as double proof.
  
  
• In 2004 the U.S. Mint honoured the 125 th anniversary of Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb. 500,000 silver one dollar coins were released into circulation.
  
  
• Each member of the European Union can issue a €2 commemorative coin once each year. Greece issued one of these in 2004 to commemorate the 2004 Olympics held in Athens, and 50 million were minted.

• In 2003 25,000 British £5 coins were released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of James Watson and Francis Crick’s identification of the structure of DNA.
  
  
• U.S. Congress issued a series of commemorative coins to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal in 1915. The Panama Pacific $50 Gold Round coin issued at this time with a mintage of 453 now sells for upwards of $125,000.
  
  
• The Australian Mint produced a $5 coin in 2002 celebrating the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The design adorning the 30,000 coins was based on a photograph of the Queen Mother during a visit to Australia in 1927, while she was still Duchess of York.
  
  
• Canada boasts a series of gold holographic coins celebrating the country’s natural wonders – Niagra Falls, the Canadian Rockies, the Northern Lights and icebergs.
  
  
• Lord of the Rings commemorative coins were issued on behalf of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to celebrate the epic motion picture trilogy. Produced by the British Royal Mint, the New Zealand $1 coins show the ring as a centrepiece surrounded by Elvish script.
