Most collected coins are regular issue, coinage issued by a mint annually for use as everyday currency in circulation. They have a very high rate of production, designs change frequently and they are easily available to all collectors.

Bullion coins are minted from gold, silver or platinum. Produced by mints around the world bullion coins are legal tender they do not enter into circulation. They are sold on the market worth of the precious metal they’re made of plus a premium, and are popular as souvenirs and with people investing in precious metal. Error coins have become highly prized by collectors because they are relatively rare. They are produced by mints as currency with unintentional errors, usually from mistakes made at some stage during the production process. Proof coins are minted particularly as collectors’ items, gifts or displays by a special technique which produces a high shine finish on the coins, sharpening details and giving them a unique finish. Proof coins are legal tender but not intended for use in everyday circulation.

Commemorative coins are minted to celebrate special events, achievements or individuals – things like Olympic Games or the anniversary of a specific battle or the reign of a monarch. They are made by mints specifically for collectors.
