Psychic tools - items and accessories to help your work

More specialized tools are generally available from new age or occultist shops or items and accessories you have around the house can be adapted for psychic work. Many items such as candles and herbs are widely available from general stores.

One method of divination is scrying. This involves letting your mind go blank, making out images and interpreting them. To do this you could use a crystal ball: just glimpse into the ball and you should make out shapes in the cloudy depths of the ball. Another method is tea-leaf reading. The person drinks a cup of tea made with leaves and leaving a little liquid in the bottom, the readers swirls the leaves around and identifies images. Mirrors or any reflective surface can be used. Highly-polished round metal scrying surfaces are available. Or you can use a bowl filled with water. Either just look at the surface of the water, or put some ink into the water and it should form images on the surface.

Psychic readers give intuition-based readings. To do this some use tarot cards which are laid out and interpreted for the sitter. Some use I Ching, which is a Chinese system using yarrow sticks or coins which are thrown to give hexagrams which are then looked up in the I Ching, or Book of Changes. Another method is using runes, which originated in Scandinavia. These are usually made of wood or stone and have symbols carved on them. The sitter draws some runes which the reader can then interpret. Divination tools, such as tarot cards and I Ching tokens, should be wrapped up in silk and put away carefully when not in use.

Other accessories which may be useful for psychic work are:

• Candles. Different colours can be used for different types of work;
• Herbs. These have medicinal and magickal properties;
• Essential oils. Aromatherapy is very popular these days. Burning essential oils in a burner can help set the right mood for psychic work or putting a few drops in the bath;
• Incense. Burn incense to purify and create the right atmosphere for psychic work;
• Crystals. Crystal healing is very popular. Different coloured stones work with different chakras.
• ESP cards. These are useful for testing psychic ability. Originally Zener cards were used, a pack of 25 cards consisting of five symbols (circle, waves, star, circle, square) appearing five times each. Any symbols can be used though, or different colours, depending on preference.
