Test your psychic ability - online or at home

There are various ways of testing for ESP or psychic ability: testers are usually looking for evidence of:

• Telepathy - mind to mind communication;
• Clairvoyance - perceiving information visually that would usually be outside the range of our senses;
• Remote viewing - seeing events or locations unknown to person being tested;
• Precognition - perceiving future events;
• Telekinesis (also known as psychokinesis) - the ability to influence the movement of inanimate objects.

Online psychic tests

There are tests online to test for psychic ability - usually symbols are randomly generated and the person doing the test has to click on which symbol he or she thinks is going to come up next. This tests precognition chiefly. A score will be kept and compared to the expected results in relation to chance; the more guesses the tester makes, the more accurate the results. Basically any system for randomly generating symbols will work, which in some ways makes computers an ideal tool for the job as they can also work out the average and the statistical chance score. Online psychic tests tend to be free.

ESP tests at home

Usually Zener cards are used for ESP tests. These were developed by Dr Karl Zener and consist of a pack of 25 cards with five symbols appearing five times. The symbols are waves, star, circle, square and cross. You can make these at home by drawing the symbols in heavy black ink on paper, photocopying them onto heavy paper and cutting out equal size cards. Other options would be to have the same symbol but five different colours, or use your own symbols, or have a bag of 25 marbles with five marbles of a particular colour. You would expect the chance rate (the rate you would expect to achieve by chance) to be 1 in 5 using the Zener cards or 25 marbles. You can use these to test for clairvoyance or telepathy.

To test for clairvoyance one person draws a card but doesn't look at it and the subject simultaneously records their guess. The card or marble is replaced. This is so the subject doesn't use logic to work out what the next card is likely to be. To test for telepathy, the person drawing the cards would look at the card and the subject would perceive the symbol through that person's mind.

You could test for telekinesis by throwing a dice, but there is scope for the subject to influence the result as they have to handle the dice. Therefore it is better to use something with which the subject has no direct contact.

The longer the trials are, the more significant the success rate. For instance, the score from running through a pack of Zener cards once could be expected to be higher than the rate of chance. However if the subject succeeds in scoring significantly higher than the rate of chance over twenty runs through the pack, this would seem to indicate ESP at work.
