Psychic surgery. This phenomenon was a well-known attraction in the Philippines, where healers would claim to be able to operate without anaesthesia or antiseptic. Package trips are arranged to the Philippines specifically to visit healers. Tony Agpaoa established psychic surgery in Manila but was indicted for fraud in the US in 1967. Psychic surgeons continue to practise their trade in Manila today. They operate with their bare hands without any instruments. They work with spiritual energy to heal their patients.

However, investigators found psychic surgeons were simulating their 'operations’, which were in fact done by sleight of hand. The practitioner would simulate making an incision, but in fact his fingers would be embedded in the patient's flesh. Blood or tissue supposedly removed from the body turned out to be animal parts. Some were found with little packets of animal blood on their body which they could squeeze and burst when they made the incision to look as though the patient was bleeding.

One theory is that this form of psychic healing works because the patient believes that they will get better. Therefore the surgeon heals the patient by putting the idea in their mind that they are going to get better. Researchers began to look into placebo surgery. Although there is proof of fraud, it is hard to determine whether psychic surgery works or not if performed by a genuine healer who is not using sleight of hand. There are many who claim that they were cured by this method.

One famous psychic surgeon is Jose Arigo, born in Brazil in 1918. He was able to perform surgical operations on people, such as removing a tumour, with whatever implement he had to hand. He didn't use painkillers or anaesthetic, nor did he use antiseptic, yet patients claimed to feel no pain when he operated, and their wounds healed remarkably quickly with no infection. He was imprisoned for practising medicine illegally but continued to heal people in prison. He died in 1971.

There are psychic surgeons in other parts of the world as well, such as the UK. It is also possible to heal animals in this way.
