A spell is a written or spoken word, or formula intended to change the course of events for good or evil. Spells are performed in magick, which is spelt with a 'k' to differentiate the type of magic associated with the occult and paranormal phenomena from the type of magic performed by illusionists such as Paul Daniels or David Blaine. This is an art practised by those who believe they can cause changes in the physical world by non-physical means.

Psychic spells are performed by someone with psychic powers such as clairvoyance or telepathy. There are websites where you can buy psychic spells. You can pay for them online and then psychics will draw up the spell for you to suit your specific needs and send it to you. Other online psychics will perform the spell for you on your behalf. The spells cover a range of issues: revenge spells; spells to stop your lover straying; spells for low self-esteem, money spells or spells for making you more successful; seduction spells; or commitment spells for getting your lover to commit to you.

Casting a psychic spell can be done by one person, or by a group of people. Spells are usually spoken or sung during a magick ritual. These can be simple, such as lighting a candle, or very complex. There are various magick traditions with different beliefs and practices. It is believed that the intent and mental focus is just as important as reciting the words. The accomplished goal is focused on until the psychic power peaks, and is released and directed towards that goal. Spells are similar to prayers, chanting or creative visualization (visualizing a desired outcome) in achieving the positive frame of mind required to achieve one's goal. There are various types of spells, beneficial ones can be known as blessings. Malevolent ones are usually referred to as hexes or curses. A person can perform a spell for themselves or aim it other people. Spells can usually be reversed.

Although both involve manipulation of natural forces, witchcraft or sorcery are considered to be different from having psychic ability. Performing magic is usually, although not always, part of religion or spiritual tradition, whereas psychics tend to practise as individuals outside religion. Investigation of the paranormal does have scientific roots (a study known as parapsychology) but magick has never been proved and is still generally considered to be mythical. Magickal and psychic abilities can be used together however.
