The Plano Balloon Festival is one of most popular family events in Texas, attracting in excess of 100 000 people every year. Held every year during the month of September, the festival features exciting attractions such as balloon launches, face painting, inflatable rides and a giant market place to name but a few.

The first annual Plano Balloon Rally was held a quarter of a century ago and was a far cry from the booming fiesta of today. Back then there was no official balloon ground, or entertainment of any kind at all for that matter. The actual event was attended by only a select few while the rest of the community witnessed the mass ascension of 50 balloons or so from all over town.

Today, no less than 100 hot air balloons sail off into the clear Texan sky every year and the event attracts crowds from all over the world. The festival opens on a Friday afternoon, with the first official launch occurring at around six pm. From there on it's fun and games the whole weekend until the closing ceremony at six pm on Sunday evening.

For the balloon enthusiast, the festival is an absolute treat. In addition to the spectacular balloon launches, the festival also offers glittering night blasts and fireworks displays, as well as a special shapes balloon competition. Over the years this contest has seen amazing hot air balloon shapes such as giant penguins, cows and ducks all take to the skies like giant, floating cartoon characters!

Other exciting events include aerobatic shows and parachute demonstrations, not to mention dance and music performances by community and local artists. Non profit organisations and local restaurants provide an abundance of mouth-watering food, while merchants at the festival market supply an endless array of artworks and crafts. There's also plenty to keep the kids busy, from balloon rides to story telling to kiddies theatre.

All in all, it can safely be said that the Plano Balloon Festival has something to offer everyone. With the 25 th annual celebration proving an amazing success as usual, dates for the next two festivals have already been set. The 2005 Festival will kick off on the 16 th of September, while the 2006 event is scheduled to begin on the 22 nd of September. Due to the fact that balloon places are limited and there is often a waiting list, it is best to submit entries well in advance.
