The event is notorious for being a photographer's dream come true. Individuals travel from far and wide to witness sight of masses of technicoloured hot air balloons ascending into the azure sky.
The main focus of this international festival is undoubtedly the opening day mass ascension. Pilots and crew members assemble in the New Mexico desert up to two hours before the first slivers of sunshine pierce the night sky. As they inflate, the balloons seem to strain against their moorings as though struggling to break free and take to the heavens.
As the sun begins to rise over the peaks of the Sandia Mountains , the moorings are finally released and thousands of balloons take to the skies like a troop of soldiers settling into formation. Photographers travel thousands of miles to be able to witness the flock of giant, soaring creatures as they float through the Rio Grande Valley . Indeed, the resounding click of cameras can be heard across the balloon park as experts and novices alike struggle to catch the 'perfect shot'.
For the balloonists themselves, the conditions within the valley are quite simply as close to perfect as they are likely to be anywhere on planet earth. In addition to the gentle breeze and typically clear skies, pilots will also be able to experience a special type of wind pattern known as the 'Albuquerque Box'.
Caused by the separation of cool and warm air under stable conditions, this trend allows pilots to 'ride' the wind currents almost directly back to their exact point of take off. During early October the phenomenon is known to occur more than 25% of the time although pilots will need to make an early start if they hope to experience its magic, as the sun's heat causes the pattern to dissipate later in the day.
The Fiesta lasts for a total of nine days and in addition to the early morning balloon ascensions, visitors can also look forward to spectacular fireworks displays, hot air balloon rides, food stalls spectacular balloon night glows and numerous other forms of entertainment. The setting is breathtaking and the experience of witnessing several hundred balloons simultaneously take to the skies is nothing short of exhilarating.
