Travel is becoming more and more popular as young people head off abroad before or after their studies and older people plan to see the world in their retirement. Travel backpacks can help take some of the pain out of traveling. More and more countries are opening their doors to backpackers and carrying all your gear on your back can be more convenient than lugging a suitcase.

Traveling backpacks are larger than standard backpacks due to the amount of stuff most people need to take with them on trips abroad. Therefore they need to be designed to be stable and not tip one way or another. Wide straps around the top of the hips help to balance the rucksack and take some of the weight off the shoulders. Straps should be adjustable to enable the pack to fit correctly. Due to the increased length, overbalancing can be an issue with a large rucksack on your back, particularly for shorter people. Smaller travel packs may be more suitable for shorter trips but most travelers find that they have more stuff to take with them than they thought. A sensible size to go for would be 5,000 cubic inches or more for a long trip.

Large travel backpacks with detachable daypacks are really handy. Once ensconced in the hotel or hostel, you can remove the daypack and use it for short outings. When attached to the rucksack, it acts as a separate compartment. Large travel packs often have a separate compartment in the top or bottom which can be used for storing a sleeping bag or laundry. Straps on the outside of the pack can be used for fastening your luggage to racks in trains or to vehicle roofs. Another use is to attach tents, sleeping bags or sleeping mats. Internal metal frames help spread the load evenly and give support.

Wheeled travel backpacks which combine the functionality of a backpack and wheeled luggage are also available. Wheeled backpacks have small wheels attached to the bottom and retractable handles to allow the luggage to be wheeled along. These are particularly useful at airports as it saves having to look for a trolley. They have backpack straps to allow the pack to be carried on the back and the handles can be slotted out of the way.

Small padlocks can be used to fasten your luggage securely. However be aware that airport personnel may need to get into your backpack. Zips can be fastened with elastic which can be undone and redone up easily. This would at least slow down potential thieves while still allowing airport staff access to the contents of the luggage for checking.
