Sling backpacks have a single strap instead of double straps and are worn over one shoulder. The advantage of this style is that the bag can be slipped on and off easily. However this can be a disadvantage if you need your hands free and the double straps, one over each shoulder, attach the backpack more securely. People with narrow shoulders in particular may find that sling backpacks slip off too easily. Otherwise it is handy for being able to access the contents of the backpack quickly and easily without having to squeeze the arms through straps.

Sling backpacks are generally wider at the bottom and narrower towards to the top with a wide strap going from the top diagonally across to one of the bottom corners. They are great as daypacks but it would not be advisable to use this style of backpack for carrying heavy loads. It would put too much strain on the shoulder bearing the load which can lead to back problems in the long-term. Some sling knapsacks have a wide strap which unzips to form a standard backpack with straps over both shoulders. This is useful for adapting the bag for longer trips such as hikes where ideally the weight carried in the backpack should be spread equally across the shoulders to avoid back strain. If the strap is long enough the wearer may be able to fit their head through the strap so they can wear the pack on their back with the strap going across their chest leaving their hands free. Some sling packs have adjustable straps to facilitate this.

Sling backpacks vary in size and style from daypacks to smart, leather purses. Designer backpack purses are a popular fashion accessory and are smaller than daypacks. Sling-style handbags can be handheld or worn over one shoulder. Daypacks have a capacity of around 2,000 cubic inches or 30 liters which is enough to hold a small towel, sunscreen, a book and a bottle of water for a day at the beach.
