School Backpack Bags - Sizing, Styles and Safety

School backpacks are essential for carrying around school books, pens, laptop computers, CD or MP3 players and a myriad of other possessions most students can't live without. Backpacks are comfortable and convenient as they leave your hands free but school backpack safety is an issue, particularly for growing children. It should be possible to find a backpack that meets safety criteria but is still fashionable enough to appeal to a school child. The first consideration is the size as an incorrectly fitting backpack is uncomfortable and causes unnecessary strain.

How to measure for a school backpack

Most backpacks have a hip belt to take some of the weight away from the shoulders. This is strongly advised for children's backpacks. The hip belt should sit just on top of the hips below the waist. Therefore the height of the backpack should be from the top of the child's hips to the top of the shoulders but no bigger. Measure the circumference around the top of the hips just below the waist to get an idea of how big the hip belt should be. The shoulder straps and hip strap should be adjustable to allow for some flexibility. This is particularly important for younger children who are growing quickly. The dimensions of the backpack should be given in inches or centimeters so you can use your measurements to select the correct school bag for your child.

Different styles and ways of carrying school bags

School backpacks with wheels are popular as these can be wheeled along the ground on flat surfaces and picked up to go up and down stairs. Rolling backpacks have inline wheels at the bottom of the pack and retractable handles. The handles can be extended for use as wheeled luggage or retracted to be used as small handle for picking the bag up and carrying it. Shoulder straps mean the bag can be worn on the back like other backpacks. This is a versatile piece of luggage which would suit most school children as it can be used in a variety of ways. Sling backpacks have a single strap so the bag is worn over one shoulder only. This should be discouraged for use by kids as it puts all the weight on one side of the body causing stress on the spine. Most children have too much stuff in their bags to be able to carry it on one shoulder in this way.

Clear or mesh bags are now a requirement for some schools in the States. This to prevent kids bringing weapons or illegal substances into school. Packs made of clear plastic or nylon mesh are see through. Mesh school backpacks can be bought in different colors to make them more interesting. A reflective stripe on a school daypack is another useful feature as passing cars will see the kid in the dark. In the winter months children often go to and return from school in the dark and teenagers are notorious for being oblivious to their surroundings so a reflective stripe could help protect them.
