Backpack purses are both chic and practical. Carrying your purse on your back keeps it out of the way and leaves your hands free for carrying shopping - perfect for girl about town intent on restocking her wardrobe. Backpack handbags can also be carried in the hand like a standard purse. Most of them have a little handle across the top for this purpose.

Drawstring tops allow items to be held securely in the bag with a flap over the top which fastens with straps. This makes it harder for items to fall out of the purse or for would-be thieves to swipe anything out of it. When the drawstring is loosened, the mouth of the purse opens up allowing the owner to rummage around inside to retrieve items.

Sling backpack purses are shaped so they have a wide bottom drawing into a narrow top creating a rounded triangular shape with the sides longer than the base. A wide strap goes from the top diagonally across to one of the bottom corners. This style of backpack handbag is worn over one shoulder which makes it easier to slip it on or off. Access into the bag is via a zip along one side. Some bags have zippered straps which allow the handbag to be worn over both shoulders when unzipped to create two straps or as a sling backpack over one shoulder when the zipper is done up.

Colors such as black, tan, brown or deep red are very popular and look good with most outfits. Leather or suede feels good to the touch and is comfortable to wear. Designer backpack purses are more expensive but are often better quality and last longer. Cheap reproductions vary in quality but can be almost as good as the real thing. Brand names are known for their quality and durability but it may be worth experimenting with unknown brands which are cheaper but not necessarily poorer quality.

Backpacks can have compartments for ease of storage and access to items you use more frequently. Some have small pockets on the front with a flap over the top which straps shut. The size is usually given as height, width and depth in inches and the capacity (ie, the volume so you can work out how much the bag holds) is given in cubic inches. Find a bag or cushion and measure that to allow you to compare the sizes.
